Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Should Christa Pike be released from prison?
3·1 day agoI’m still cooking on it a bit. In the US, there is a concept of “judgement-proof” people in terms of civil litigation. If you have no assets or money, a civil suit can’t really get anything out of you. In this dystopian universe there could be “life sentence-proof” people. You get a terminal diagnosis with only like a 1 year prognosis. What’s to stop someone like that from going on a murder spree of retribution? If they survive the trial, they might only live a month of the sentence. 100 life sentences turns out to be under 9 years if those last a month on average. And there could be additional shenanigans with the rich trying to cure that ailment when a known terminal disease was present at sentencing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Should Christa Pike be released from prison?
5·1 day agoSomewhere a dystopian sci-fi describes a justice system where you can receive multiple life sentences and actually serve them all. Upon a natural death, you are revived and renewed to the age you were at sentencing to serve the next life sentence. Only after completing them all are you free to die and remain that way.
The rich and powerful use their sway to prolong the sentences of those that have wronged them. Died early from an aggressive cancer? Well upon renewal they bribed the system to cure you of that. Or they implant a disease that won’t kill you sooner but makes your time even worse.

6·6 days agoIs there a way to report potential tax evaders? I’d bet good money he ain’t handling his money legally.
I mean, outside the healthcare/food aspect, that’s a college level course in chemistry. Basically, “saturated” fats are long carbon chains with those carbon atoms filled with hydrogen so there are only single bonds in the chain. “Unsaturated” are those same carbon chains but with at least two carbon atoms (adjacent to each other) not filled. Rather than those carbon atoms having one more hydrogen each, they just add a bond between them forming a double bond. This double bond is an easy point your digestive system uses to break down the fat. For unsaturated there are some different groupings. Those are mono or poly unsaturated and trans or cis. The difference between mono and poly is the number of double bonds. Mono, there is only a single double bond. Poly there are 2 or more. Cis or trans indicate where the chain continues after the double bond. Cis, it continues on the same side making it difficult for molecules to settle in a nice organized fashion. Imagine trying to stack some sticks that all have a 90 degree bend in them. Trans fats continue the chain on the opposite side. This results in a straighter more easily organized chain. Now your bundle of sticks are all straight. Much easier to stack. This stacking makes it much more difficult to break apart those chains when they are straight.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why doesn't the NHL include playoffs from lifetime stats for players?
1·6 days agoPretty sure all pro sports do this.
Trans is actually always unsaturated. It’s also much worse than saturated. That’s why you have to be careful just looking for unsaturated fats.
also healthier fats which is basically unsaturated
But not trans-fats.

4·8 days agoEVs can break down. It tends to be less frequent but more expensive. I just had a bigger repair on mine. I’ll be crunching the numbers one of these days to see what the average cost of repairs has been.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do I tell my (republican) parents when they constantly bring up expensive gas prices and put the burden on California because of gas taxes and "stupid" regulatory fees?
69·11 days agoDid they removed about gas prices under biden and solely blame him? If so, ask what’s different now. See if they can point to state level changes that affected gas prices.
This is assuming they would at least attempt a good faith argument. If not, I’d just laugh and imply they have the mentality of a child thinking they figured out the world and are dead wrong. Like listen to their inane rants and just kinda chuckle as if it’s impressive they built such a convoluted plot in their head.

5·12 days agoKnew someone that was touting trump as the “president of peace” during the campaign and election. When he bombed Iran I went back to his post and commented to point out his hypocrisy. This dumbass just basically said what you posted. But no /s… Like they are advanced levels of dumb. And worse they’ve been [in]bred to never admit they are wrong. See the piece of Schmitt in congress grilling Jack Smith.

To clarify, that sack of shit was 24 when his dad went to prison and he only spent 14 months of a 24 month sentence locked up. If he truly had strong feelings, he should continue to champion the cause and use his political clout to help out people like the man in this article.
