“when the blackouts come, be sure to still use fiat currency to mediate all interactions, under no circumstances should you attempt to barter or rely on mutual aid with your neighbors”

It’s actually crazy how fast everyone defaults to mutual aid during a blackout. We had one here last year that nearly destroyed all infrastructure in the region with only a few spots that you could get power/internet/water and literally everyone was just helping everyone else out and cooking for the community.

Only a few businesses were still charging people and they lost all goodwill they had before lol. This is also in Amerikkka.

It’s not uncommon to hear people talk about how they kinda miss the vibes of that disaster even though it was technically cataclysmic in nature.

Lol that first one was us. Helene made everyone here hate the cops. Ingles is a dead zone now since they had cops guarding their stores while no one else did.

The whole situation was definitely presented differently in the media than was experienced on the ground though. Other than the loss of homes and life, there was a ton of community organizing going on. So many free meals and shared resources from everyone. Whole brigades of dads dusting off chainsaws to go clear roads.

It’s actually pretty good in the more “urban” areas. Some major roads are still out, but there are bypasses now. If you came here and didn’t go out on the trails you wouldn’t even know.

Asheville lost it’s arts district, literally washed down the river, Marshall got wiped out, and basically anything along a river or stream was totally destroyed. Hendersonville managed to keep power and water on through the whole disaster so it was kinda a hub for the region (glad the town planners built an underground tunnel network that was used for utilities lol).

Everything kinda went back to normal for people who weren’t in the new floodplain pretty quick.

Fuck. Good luck to y’all. I’m down here in Florida and am always worried about us getting slammed like that again. Did y’all ever see any real federal support? I remember some shitty checks but hadn’t heard much more after that.

I mean in a super formal way yes, but in a “we all help each other out” way, that’s not fully altruistic but not formalized either, I think it makes sense. Maybe that doesn’t technically count as barter then, idk. I’d liken it to “paying back” your friends for buying you lunch. its not about the exact dollar amount (unless you’re a bloodless ghoul) its just vibes based, they get you one day, you cover them the next
