I’ve checked, M2 AP is legal is most states and somewhat in Canada. Meaning you don’t quite need a 1K single shot 50 cal to drop someone in a LUV or IMV. Also if all you have is an AR-10 with milspec lower and drop in autosear, technically you can extract M2 tips and reload into 308, coupled with bull bore and good scope you practically have a poor person SAW for fire support. But the question being, are there any other legal AP rounds like the M2?
Sometimes folks reload the black-tips into 308 and sell them for like $3 a round. It isn’t bad if you are just building a small doomsday stockpile over time.
Something I have seen go for cheap are AP rounds reloaded for the M14 (probably 308 again) but idk enough to speak confidently. I assume occasionally there are just good deals but the black-tips are very limited and only getting more so. There are also incendiary rounds running at like 10$ a pop.
I will say that as someone who is interested in the rounds, I’m not confident they are as useful as I would like. They are useless against high quality armor anyway. Even 338 lapua, 416 Barrett, and 50 BMG APs will not reliably penetrate high quality armor. And now days I assume anyone with armer has the good stuff too. High quality armor seems to be substantially cheaper than say a big bore rifle or the substantially more expensive (than 30-06) AP rounds needed to destroy it. Level IV armor is very efficient and effective. It’s not worth pursuing the ability to negate it imo.
AP would be nice to have, and I hope to get some so I can get the most out of my rifle. But it is worth mentioning that, like with anything in the firearms world, it won’t make you “safer” and it won’t make you that much more dangerous than anyone else with a rifle either. It may be just as efficient to use that money for more standard rounds, maintaining/cleaning supplies, or maybe an accessory that will make shooting easier. Or hell, maybe just get some level IV armor plates.
